Why Taber

Being ideally located in the heartland of the agriculture hub of Southern Alberta Taber businesses are able to fully capitalize on the Alberta Advantage

Alberta led the country in growth in 2017 with real Gross Domestic Product (GDP) growth measured at 4.1%. According to recent Conference Board of Canada projections, growth is Alberta is expected to be more moderate in 2018 at 2.5%. The recovery in oil and gas activity is one of the principal factors driving Alberta’s recovery in 2017 as drilling activity for much of 2017 has been double 2016 levels. The ramp up in production will once again highlight the need for additional pipeline capacity and pipeline projects will again become a key issue for politicians in the province to diversify markets and improve returns for Canadian crude.

Investment outside the energy sector, particularly in commercial construction, has lagged behind other sectors of the economy, but this is similar to 2008-09 recession when non-residential investment did not begin recovering until late 2011. As the province moves into a second year of sustained growth in 2018, non-residential investment is expected to stabilize and begin to recover.

Alberta’s manufacturing industries experienced solid growth in 2017 as real export growth was 5.7% and expected to be 3.4% in 2018. Additionally, Alberta’s labour market continued to recover as unemployment continued to decline throughout 2017. The unemployment rate was 6.9% in December 2017 compared to 8.5% in December 2016.
